Ingredients

Brownies

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Frosting

  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • dash of salt

Instructions

Brownies

  • Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a jelly roll pan.
  • Combine the flour, sugar, salt and baking soda in a large bowl; set aside.
    2 cups flour, 2 cups sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Add the butter, water and cocoa powder to a saucepan.
    1 cup butter or margarine , 1 cup water, 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • Place over medium heat and bring to a boil, stirring frequently.
  • Pour over the dry ingredients and mix.
  • Add the buttermilk, eggs and vanilla; stir until well-combined.
    1/2 cup buttermilk, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 15 minutes, or until the center of the cake is done. While the brownies are in the oven, make the frosting.

Frosting

  • Place the powdered sugar in a large bowl; set aside.
    2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • Combine the butter, buttermilk and cocoa powder in a small saucepan.
    1/2 cup butter or margarine, 1/3 cup buttermilk, 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring frequently, and let boil for 2 minutes.
  • Pour over the powdered sugar, add the vanilla and salt and whisk together until smooth.
    1 teaspoon vanilla, dash of salt
  • Spread over the warm brownies.

Notes

To Make Your Own Buttermilk:  Add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to a liquid measuring cup.  Add enough milk to make 1 cup total and stir.
