Why I Love this Dessert

  • It’s an easy dump cake recipe with just simple ingredients and a few minutes of prep time needed!
  • Very few dishes needed – not even a mixing bowl!
  • Great for a weeknight meal or a special occasion!
  • So moist, rich and simply incredible!

Ingredients Needed (Amounts in recipe card below)

  • Boxed Cake Mix – A box of chocolate cake mix or devil’s food cake mix.
  • Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix
  • Marshmallows – You can omit the marshmallows if you’d like, but I love the extra gooey texture they give!
  • Milk – Any milk should work; 2% or whole milk is my preference.
  • Butter – Salted or unsalted butter is fine.
  • Chocolate Chips – You can use dark, semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips.  I prefer semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips to balance out the sweetness!

How to Make Chocolate Dump Cake

Open the cake mix and sprinkle it in the bottom of a greased baking pan.

Next, dump the pudding mix on and then the marshmallows.

Pour the melted butter and milk over the dry ingredients.

Chocolate cake batter spread into the bottom of a white ceramic baking dish.

Stir until everything is combined.

Sprinkle evenly with chocolate chips and bake!

I love serving this moist cake warm with vanilla ice cream and a little drizzle of chocolate syrup or caramel sauce!!

Change it Up!

  • Make it vanilla!  Use yellow cake mix and vanilla pudding mix instead of chocolate, then use white chocolate or peanut butter chips on top.
  • Give it some crunch!  Instead of all chocolate chips, use half chocolate chips and half toffee bits.  The toffee bits add a lovely crunch and great flavor!
  • Add peanut butter!  Use half chocolate chips and half peanut butter chips on top.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called a dump cake?

Because you simply dump ingredients into the pan!  Though most dump cakes don’t get stirred, this one does, but just right in the baking pan!

Is dump cake supposed to be gooey?

This one is gooey (in the best way!)…so moist and full of rich chocolate flavor!

How should I store leftover dump cake?

Let the cake cool completely then cover with plastic wrap or store leftovers in an airtight container.  It will be good at room temperature for 1-2 days or in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Equipment

  • One 9×13-inch baking dish

Ingredients

  • 1 box Devil's food cake mix (dry mix)
  • One 3.9 ounce box instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • 2 1/4 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup butter melted
  • One 12 ounce bag semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350℉ and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Sprinkle the dry cake mix into the bottom of the baking dish, then top with chocolate pudding mix and marshmallows.
  • Pour the milk and melted butter on top; whisk until combined.
  • Sprinkle with chocolate chips.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the edges of the pans are set and the center is still wiggly.
  • Enjoy warm with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

When served warm, this cake is easiest to serve as more of a cobbler (spooned out rather than cut into slices).  Once it’s chilled, it can be sliced…but I highly recommend trying it warm! 🙂
