Crock Pot Chocolate Cobbler

If you read through my Top 10 Recipes of 2019, you know that my Chocolate Cobbler has been a hugely popular recipe. I can’t say I’m totally surprised, because it’s rich and chocolate-y, yet SO simple to make.

Because it’s been such a hit, I decided to create a version for the Crock Pot! I loved the idea of this, because there are many weekends that I’m gone for a couple hours running errands and would LOVE to return home to some ready-to-eat chocolate cobbler. And who doesn’t love their home smelling insanely chocolate-y?!

How do I make Chocolate Cobbler in the Crock Pot?

It’s actually quite simple!! Just pay close attention to the bold notes below and you’ll be good to go! 🙂

First, you’ll pour some melted butter in the bottom of a slow cooker. Then, you’ll make a simple batter and spread it out on the bottom of the slow cooker. Next, you’re going to mix a few dry ingredients and sprinkle it over the batter; DO NOT STIR into the batter.

Lastly, you’ll pour some boiling water over-top (again, DO NOT STIR), place the lid on top and turn the slow cooker on! While it cooks, the cake batter will rise to the top and leave a fudgy sauce on the bottom, making this recipe SO darn good.

I highly recommend topping this chocolate cobbler with a scoop of ice cream. The ice cream melts on the warm cake and makes for the most delicious dessert! If you’re feeling extra fancy, whip up a batch of Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream to scoop on top….Yum!

What size Crock Pot should I use for this recipe?

During my recipe testing process, I used a 5 quart round Crock-Pot brand slow cooker. You can use anything a little bigger or a little smaller (I’d recommend staying between a 4.5 quart and a 6 quart slow cooker). If you do end up using a larger slow cooker, you might have to decrease the cook-time as there’s a larger cooking surface.

Each slow cooker will vary in how hot their “high” temperature and “low” temperatures are. Therefore, the first time you make it, I’d just recommend making a note on how much time it actually took so you know for the next time!

How do I know when my Chocolate Cobbler is done?

Once the chocolate cobbler has been in the Crock Pot for about 2 hours, I like to take a fork and see if the cake is done. If it’s done on the outsides and still looks like batter in the middle, it needs more time. When the cake looks done on top, now it’s up to you…

Want a lot of sauce on the bottom (which I highly recommend)? Then, your chocolate cobbler is ready to eat! If you want a little less fudgy sauce, let it cook a little longer as more water will evaporate and there will be less sauce.

Of course, you don’t want under-cooked cake (batter), but the nice thing is that there are no eggs in this recipe. Therefore, there’s really no food safety issues if it is under-cooked….or if you just want it really saucy! 🙂

How should I store leftovers?

Have an extra scoop and forget the leftovers!! 😉 Really, this Crock Pot Chocolate Cobbler is 10x better the first time around than re-heated, so I don’t recommend planning for leftovers.

However, if you happen to have leftovers, here’s the best option: First off, scoop it into a glass or plastic container for storage and let it cool completely. Once it’s cool, cover it with a lid or plastic wrap and refrigerate.

When you’re ready to enjoy the leftovers, scoop into a microwave safe dish and warm until the sauce is nice and runny again. As always, top with a scoop of ice cream and enjoy!! 🙂

Some of my other favorite chocolate desserts…..

Homemade Chocolate Layer Cake – I always say a party without cake is just a meeting! 😉 This cake is perfect for any celebration, no matter how big or small!

The Best Rich and Moist Chocolate Cake – It’s exactly that! Moist and rich and oh so tasty!! It even starts with a cake mix, so it’ll be done before you know it!

Ice Cream Cake Roll – Cake and ice cream, all in one slice!! Believe it or not, it’s actually quite simple to make and worth. every. minute!

    This dessert is amazing!

    1. Can you use heavy cream instead of milk?

      1. Hi Jennifer – I’m worried it would make the batter too thick. Let me know if you give it a try! ~Kelsey

  2. Can you leave this recipe on warm for serval hours after cooking time?

    1. Hi Madi – I think a couple hours should be fine. It would really depend on the slow cooker as some of them still “cook” on warm. I’d try leaving it on warm for a couple hours and see how it looks!

  3. Can this recipe be doubled in a crockpot ?

    1. Hi Cheryl! Although I’ve never tried it, I do think it’ll work fine (might have to add a little time, though)! If you try, let me know hw it goes! 🙂

This is simply delicious! Made it for my in-laws for dessert and was an instant hit! Will be making again! Not low cal, but so worth it!

  5. I am thinking about making this for my moms birthday. I love 5 hours away, do you think I should cook before I leave? Or cook when I get there?

Hi Kelsey! I’m so excited to try this recipe next weekend for my sister’s bridal shower! I wanted to ask you how to alter this recipe to add peanut butter? I compared your baked chocolate cobbler and baked PB chocolate cobbler recipes and saw some differences. I also see some differences in the baked chocolate cobbler recipe and this crockpot recipe. I do not want to mess it up by guessing. Can you help me, please?

I made this today for dessert. I wanted a chocolatey dessert to go with my grilled burgers. This was wonderful! So good and chocolatey. And with only having burgers and chips, everyone had room for dessert. Everyone thought this was a fabulous chocolate cobbler. Thanks so much for the easy directions and recipe!

  10. Hi! I can’t wait to make this. I remember when they had this at Cracker Barrel. I was just wondering if the 3 TBLSP of cocoa made it really chocolatey? If I wanted it a little less how much should I add. Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi Kim – 3 tablespoons really isn’t a whole lot. You could bring it down to 2 if you’d prefer though! 🙂 ~Kelsey

  11. Is the cake mixture supposed to be thick like a brownie mixture? I followed the directions to a tee but, it just seems so thick! It’s in my slow cooker now, guess I’ll see, how it turns out! Looks & smells really good so, I hope it tastes as good… 😋

    1. Hi Sherry – Sorry for the slow response. Yes! It is a pretty thick batter. I hope you enjoyed it!!! ~Kelsey

One of my most requested desserts. I tried it on a whim when I was asked to bring a dessert to a dinner party which had a gentleman who wouldn’t touch fruit, nuts or veggies. When I checked on it close to finishing time, and that chocolate-y goodness wafted into the air, I looked at the host and said “I think we are in trouble”. lol. It is SOO good. We like it with vanilla ice cream, of course! Delicious recipe!!
