Just three ingredients are needed to whip up a batch of Nutella Puff Pastry! The buttery pastry is twisted up with a layer of the decadent chocolate hazelnut spread and baked to perfection!!
Store-bought puff pastry is one of my favorite things I use to elevate any meal! It’s easy to work with and results in delicate, flaky pastries with rich buttery notes in both sweet and savory recipes.
Pair the flaky pastry with creamy Nutella and it’s truly a match made in heaven! These Nutella Puff Pastries look impressive, but fear-not, they’re a CINCH to make!
Three Ingredients Needed
- Puff Pastry – Typically in the freezer section of the grocery store near the whipped topping and frozen pies.
- Nutella – Or another brand of chocolate hazelnut spread.
- Powdered Sugar – Optional, but adds a little more sweetness and looks beautiful sprinkled on top!
How to Make Nutella Puff Pastry
As beautiful as these are, they’re actually quite simple to make. Follow along with these photos and you’ll see why it’s such an easy recipe.
Make sure you preheat the oven first. Having the oven nice and hot when the pastries go in is essential in getting that flaky puff pastry perfect.
Start by thawing the pastry just enough so you can unfold it. Once unfolded, you can use a rolling pin to make it into a nicely shaped square, but it’s not necessary. If the seams tear a bit, simply press them back together with your fingers.
Next, you’ll add the chocolate spread on top of the square of puff pastry in an even layer. I find that the best way to spread it is with a rubber spatula or offset spatula.
Then unfold the second puff pastry sheet and place it over the Nutella.
Use a pizza cutter or a sharp knife to cut 9 even strips of dough. (You can make 12 if you’d like, they’ll just be a bit smaller.)
Twist the strip of dough and then roll it into a swirl shape; repeat with the remaining strips.
Put the pastries onto a baking sheet, giving them a little room to spread as they bake.
Optional: If you want a little more of a shine on these, you can brush the tops with egg wash (1 beaten egg + 1 tablespoon water). You can also top the uncooked pastry with a few mini chocolate chips.
Bake these in the preheated oven until they’re a golden brown color. Dust with powdered sugar and enjoy!!!
Tips for Working with Puff Pastry
- The best part of puff pastry is its flakiness and buttery flavor! Try not to over-work the pastry or use your warm hands on it too much as that’ll melt the butter and give you less-crispy pastry.
- If the pastries are ready before the oven is preheated, keep them in the freezer until ready.
- You can use a thin or thick layer of Nutella…however, if you add too much, they’ll be difficult to twist up.
- Keep a close eye on the pastry while it bakes. You do not want it to be raw on the inside….but if you wait too long, they’ll be burnt! If you’re unsure, remove one pastry from the oven and cut it open. If the center is more of a transparent and greasy looking, it needs a bit more time.
